Math Syllabus

5th Grade Math Syllabus

Content and Standards: This year we will be exploring the 5th Grade standards from the North Carolina Standard course of Study. Throughout this school year, we will be exploring Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT), Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA), Number and Operations - Fractions (NF), Measurement and Data (MD),  and Geometry (G). We will use a variety of methods to explore these standards.  Some of these will include the use of an interactive notebook, note taking, hands-on manipulatives, games, and projects. We will not be using a textbook in this class, but will use an interactive notebook to create our own for more meaningful understanding and reference.

Collaborative Group Work: Students will be expected to work together at various times for classroom assignments.  Each group member is expected to actively contribute to the task and be respectful of other group members at all times.

Accelerated Math: In years past we have had Accelerated Math as a daily homework and class assignment. Unfortunately due to budget constraints we will not be able to continue with this assignment this year. However, we are going to have other means of differentiating your child’s work this year. For example; Classworks, FrontRow, and Schoolnet.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Be on time and prepared for class.

  2. Respect yourself and others.

  3. Water is allowed in the classroom.

  4. Stay on task at all times.

  5. Put forth your BEST effort!

Grading Scale: We will be using a 10 point scale during the 2017-2018 school year.

A 90 - 100 F 59 or below

B 80-89

C 70-79

D 60-69

Late Work Policy: Many types of assignments are given during a nine week period to include homework, classwork, quizzes, projects, and tests. When an assignment is given, a due date will also be assigned. Students are allowed to turn in work up to five days late, and 10 points will be deducted for each day it is late. ANY ASSIGNMENT THAT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 5 DAYS AFTER THE DUE DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. As the teacher, I will try to be mindful of events and circumstances that may interfere with a due date and I will give sufficient time for assignments to be completed. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is GIVEN, students may have up to 5 days to complete the assignment.  It is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher for any missed work. If the student is absent on the date an assignment is DUE, the assignment is due on the day the student returns.

Please e-mail me anytime with questions or concerns. You may also call the school and leave a message. Please sign, date, and return the bottom portion of this syllabus.
