5th Grade Science Syllabus
Content and Standards: This year we will be exploring the 5th Grade standards from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Throughout this school year, we will be exploring Weather patterns and Phenomena, Matter and Energy, Ecosystems, Evolution and Genetics, Human Body Systems, Energy, and Forces and Motion. We will use a variety of methods to explore these standards. Some of these will include the use of an interactive notebook, note taking, labs, and projects. We will not be using a textbook in this class, but will use an interactive notebook to create our own for more meaningful understanding and reference.
Students will be required to create a Science Fair project. Specific information will be sent home when we begin the projects.
Collaborative Group Work: Students will be expected to work together at various times for classroom assignments. Each group member is expected to actively contribute to the task and be respectful of other group members at all times.
Be on time and prepared for class.
Respect yourself and others.
ONLY water and Gatorade are allowed in the classroom.
Stay on task at all times.
Put forth your BEST effort!
Grading Scale: We will be using a 10 point scale during the 2016-2017 school year.
A 90 - 100
F 59 or below
Late Work Policy: Many types of assignments are given during a nine week period to include homework, classwork, quizzes, projects, and tests. When an assignment is given, a due date will also be assigned. Students are allowed to turn in work up to five days late, and 10 points will be deducted for each day it is late. ANY ASSIGNMENT THAT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 5 DAYS AFTER THE DUE DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. As the teacher, I will try to be mindful of events and circumstances that may interfere with a due date and I will give sufficient time for assignments to be completed. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is GIVEN, students may have up to 5 days to complete the assignment. It is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher for any missed work. If the student is absent on the date an assignment is DUE, the assignment is due on the day the student returns.
